NJ Division of Family Development
The Division of Family Development (DFD) provides leadership and supervision to the public and non-profit agencies that deliver financial assistance and critical safety net services to individuals and families in New Jersey. Among the programs within this agency are Work First New Jersey/Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (WFNJ/TANF) and WFNJ/General Assistance (WFNJ/GA) – the two programs that make up the state’s welfare program; NJ SNAP (formerly Food Stamps); Child Support services and Child Care services.
NJ Department of Human Services
The New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS) serves seniors, individuals and families with low incomes; people with mental illnesses, addictions, developmental disabilities, or late-onset disabilities; people who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind; parents needing child care services, child support and/or healthcare for their children; and families facing catastrophic medical expenses for their children.
County Welfare Agencies
The county Boards of Social Services; also known as welfare agencies, handle child support cases. The agencies work to find non-custodial parents, establish paternity and file complaints with the courts for child support and paternity. They also provide access to welfare/ TANF benefits, food stamps, Medicaid, child care, employment services and other local assistance programs.
