Knowing Your Rights and Responsibilities (CP)

UNDER NEW JERSEY’S CHILD SUPPORT PROGRAM, PARENTS HAVE CERTAIN RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES.

A CUSTODIAL PARENT’S RIGHTS:

  • To be notified of any action that significantly impacts the child support case;
  • To receive payments on time;
  • To get information through the New Jersey Child Support Hotline (1-877-NJKIDS1), including the amount of support collected; the amount paid toward late payments; and the amount paid;
  • To request a review every three years; and
  • To appeal a decision or request a review of a decision.

A CUSTODIAL PARENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To notify the child support office of any changes that impact the case;
  • To go to all scheduled court appearances;
  • To help in establishing paternity [identifying the father of your child(ren)] and a child support order;
  • To tell the office if you move; and
  • To tell the office if there is a change in custody.

CONFIDENTIALITY

New Jersey follows very strict laws that keep child support cases private and confidential. Personal information collected and kept by the child support program is not public record. All child support staff are bound to keep your matters confidential and to protect your privacy.
